POTENTIAL TRANSFORMER
Potential Transformer is primarily designed to check single and
three-phase power line voltages in power metering and electrical
instrumentation systems. Since it provides step up or step down
voltage and current with electrical isolation, is effective in
connecting electrical applications to high-voltage and high current
power systems.
Potential Transformer has primary and secondary winding. The primary
winding is precisely connected to the power circuit between two
phases or one phase and the ground depending upon the grade of
the transformer and requirement of the application.
A potential transformer is exclusively designed that permits the
meter to take readings from electrical connections with higher
voltage (potential) than the meter competent of handling the same
without potential transformer.
The working principle of potential transformer is the same as
of other transformers. It transforms voltages from high to low.
A potential transformer functions for single and three phase technique
and is attached at a position where it is suitable to measure
the voltage.
Potential transformers provide precise voltages for meters suitable
for billing applications for industrial business client or Companies.
Potential transformers provide precise voltages for meters suitable
for watt hour meters, demand meters, billing applications for
industrial business client or Companies and are used as pilot
devices for power factor meters, voltmeters and ammeters.
The potential transformers are used to scale down the line to
neutral voltage of Wye system in which the voltage between any
two wires permanently gives the similar extent of voltage on a
three phase systems or, the line-to-line voltage of a Delta system
to the rated input scale of the meter i.e. normally 120 V.
